I've used steel masonry nails coated with very thick kiln wash succesfully, perfectly round holes. You can get them in different thicknesses and you don't have to cut them. But, do you still use hammers and nails in America? There's a progamme on UK TV about people building their own (one-off, desig...

Lyn There's a site which may have something suitable - http://www.wire-scuplture.com which sells a vast range of precious and base metal wire. They're in MS, sorry, I don't know what state this is the abreviation for. I was looking for a UK supplier of silver wire to include when fusing and found th...

I'd like to know too please, not so much the scoring - I've got a nifty little gadget that rets in the mouth of the bottle and scores an even line - but how do you get it to break? I've tried thermal shock, hot water inside/cold out and vice versa; the bottle breaks, but not where I want it to. Can ...

Also Austin Blue Moon, Texas - austinbluemoon.com . I recently bought some dragonflies, they're beautiful. The website shows the pieces actual size. Very friendly and helpful people, too.

I think what I'll do is try it with an unworked piece of float - why waste the sandblasting etc? - and see what happens. Maybe my husband will be as courteous as your lady Paul. If it's not too horrible I'll let you know what happened, if I can work out how to post a picture. "When you know, yo...

Hello everyone Sorry for taking so long to reply, I must have inadvertently unticked the "notify me of reply" box when I posted. I thought it was a bit odd that no one had replied so checked today. Brock - the shape of the mold is a hemisphere with a small flat bottom (or is that me I'm de...

Slumping 10mm glass

I intended to make a bowl of a 30 cm circle of 10 mm glass, sandblasted and coloured, then slumped into a ss mould, diameter 30 cm, depth 15cm. However, I've been told that this mould will be too deep for the glass and that I'll get roll over of the top edge, which obviously will spoil the end resul...

Paul Yes, Artista is hard; lower temps, whilst full fusing, leave the surface of the individual pieces raised; even at 830C they look like shiny wine gums - almost good enough to eat - or is that too good to eat? I tried some more test pieces using two colours of BE irridescent, both irridescent sid...

Paul I haven't had too much experience with fusing, I'm taking evening classes in stained glass including warm glass. I use Artista for fusing projects and had no problems combining it with dichroic (from CBS) and Spectrum 90CoE fusible. I haven't used it with regular BE but have recently experiment...

Barbara, yes ordinary steel wool. I've used it only when the copper is completely encased in the glass, I've not tried it for hangings. Just a small amount placed somewhere on the copper is enough. You could do a few test pieces to see how much you need - trying to describe "a small amount"...

A very little wire wool placed on the copper will make it retain the colour and, although it doesn't burn away completely, doesn't show much. I don't know why it works though!

A light sandblasting before painting will make the paint adhere well and there are no problems with tile adhesive. Car paint is excellent for the back of tiles, sprayed rather than brushed to give a better finish. You need several light coats rather than one heavy coat for an even finish. You can al...

Hi. I've seen quite a few postings here about micas but, I'm sorry to say, I don't know what they are. Are they same as lustres? And do I mean the same thing by lustres as you? I know lustres as liquid colours including metallics for firing. Is mica metal, how is it packaged - powder or what and how...

I have found a good clear epoxy adhesive and at a reasonable price. In the UK it's marketed as "Araldite Super-Ceramic and glass"; I don't know if it will be called that in the US. The carton says that Araldite is a registered trademark of Vantico AG, Basel, Switzerland. It's crystal clear...
