Re: HOW to use this mold

hi,

wondering if just butting up the glass will make the pieces pull apart during the firing instead of fusing together?

would a good amount of frit on the seams avoids this?

thanks, seachange

Re: compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

A photo would be really helpful! You may not be seeing 'haze' at all; in asking glass to bend at extreme angles you'll often see 'stretch marks'. It's really hard to know what you're seeing because we may all be using different terms... Hi Valerie, Yes, you are right. I am calling them compression ...

Re: compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

Seachange, try a test run with regular or crystal clear. It could be the Tekta causing the haze you are seeing. Hi Fay many thanks for replying. The "haze" are compression marks, because of the extreme bending angle. I thought this could be avoid by slowing the firing further. It reduces ...

Re: compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

My schedule was approximately (I forgot to look up the schedule when I was in the studio) 150c/hr- 650C, 20 mins (observe) skip to 515C, 45 mins (tack fused pieces) 80c/hr - 370,0 off The observation is essential for me, as different arrangements of pieces used Hi Stephen well, no luck. The slump f...

Re: compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

I couldn't finish the blanks planned to be fired today, so decided to run another test. Have changed all the afaps to 40C per hour, this is adding 30' to each section. Kiln is now at 630, I am peeping often through the view hole, corners haven't quite fully slumped yet. Will have to wait till tomorr...

Re: compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

So very sorry, wrong slumping schedule, my apologies. Here is the right one: Centigrades 150 - 600 - 15' afap - 620 - 15' afap - 640 - 15' afap - 660 - 15' slump was ready at 660 with 5' hold The kiln took 2 minutes from 600 to 620, 14' from 620 to 640, 10' from 640 to 660. If I slow down instead of...

Re: compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

I never take my hankerchief drops beyond 700C Hi Stephen Would you mind sending me a PM with the ramp ups and holds you use to get to 700? Your firing must be much slower and longer than I am using. I usually do a lot of tests, but I am in a bit of bind with the delivery time. Would love to get thi...

compression mark in small handkerchief bowl

Hi, wondering if you could please help me with this problem. I am making tea lights for a gift shop. Handkerchief vase type, prefused square blank, single layer tekta with some colored frit balls as decoration. Slumping over round ceramic kiln props, 3" tall. This gives me the shape I was after...

Re: avoiding sag in a mold

Hi Lisa C, Have you tried BE mold 8934? I am guessing that this mold should give a similar nice little dish shape, but be easier to use, because of the way the glass would sit on the sloped sides of the mold, instead of just on the edge. Just got the mold, but haven't used it yet. Best wishes, seach...

Re: Polishing Puzzle

Hi Drecilla You got fantastic information. Just wanted to say that when I did my first vase (also sawing the border with the tile saw), I tried to use diamond pads (600 and up). It was mainly a test piece, therefore was only aiming at a soft, matte finish. I ruined more than I gained, because found ...

Re: Ugh, yet another tile saw question! :)

The thin blades need stiffeners/stabilizers on both sides, and they need to be fairly large. Or at least my thin blade does: My saw's table isn't all that square to the blade, but the blade makes perfect cuts as long as the stiffeners are on. Hi Morganica Could you please let me know diameter of th...

Re: best mold shape for sushi dish and sauce?

Hi Bert and David Many thanks for your replies. Sorry about delay in thanking you, life got a bit in the way. I sent a list of alternatives to the gallery the moment I received your emails. Think that Davis' suggestion might be a bit long for this place, but I love it, so included it. Bert, your ide...

best mold shape for sushi dish and sauce?

Hi again I have a request from a gallery for sushi dishes and sushi sauce bowls. I don't eat sushi (yes, I know, my loss :) ), therefore don't know what shape would be a good selling one. Did several google searches, the sushi molds on offer seem to be a lot more curved than the actual finished sush...

Re: Slumping schedule for BE medium classic mold

Many thanks Stephen, I'll introduce a soak next time, it is always good to get the firings a bit better each time. I also use the ball mold, same diameter. It is a shorter drop and a simpler shape, these slumps are ready at 610C. Got the bigger ball mold for the larger kiln as well, but still have t...

Re: Slumping schedule for BE medium classic mold

Hi lmartine I have used the same mold 4 times, with a 2 layer blank My slumping schedule is (have changed it to F): 300 - 1100 - 0 105 - 1200 - 60' Included 60' hold at the end in case I need it, but the slump has always finished when the kiln reached 1200. It is slightly faster than Marty's, but th...

Re: dichroic glass having flecks come off in firing

Hi, I have had exact same thing happening with rainbow two. Long time ago, found out from this board that it is sometimes prone to do this. Occasionally some of the Profusion patterns silver on black "spit" bits of silver, enough to be annoying. I tend to use a rectangular piece of kilnshe...

Many thanks Steve, I specially liked the last line about the daily changes in physical art.

Thanks again also to everyone that contributed. It has helped me a lot to get my thoughts in line. The meeting went well, probably only one of many to come, but a good starting point.

Best wishes, seachange
