When I was learning to fuse, I took a fusing class from a gal out of her home studio. I have no idea what she had for insurance, but quite frankly, it was more like a few friends getting together than a class. I learned a ton - way more than friends of mine got while taking 2 month courses because I...

If I'm understanding what you want to do right, I would try fiber paper. I've seen it done once - The artist felt it created depth in the piece.

I figure it out when I buy it. But, I did buy a bunch of second-hand scrap once and I never figured out how to tell ahead of time, short of expirementation. If there is a difference in how it turns out due to temperature, I never noticed it.

Have fun, fun, fun!

Borax

I'm almost too embarassed to ask this, but I really need to know. Does Borax come in a can the way Comet does? Or is it a bleach, like Clorox? I can't find it in the grocery or drug store - will it be at Wal-mart? I can't seem to find it and none of my co-workers at the law firm I work at see...

My first kiln is a Skutt also. When it arrived, it had a chip, and they gave me a new lid and let me keep the old one - which worked just fine. No problemo. I think it was Perry and Mike that helped me. There are REAL PEOPLE working at Skutt. My next kiln will be a Skutt, and the one after that too....

Will it break if I walk on it?

I'd like to make a mosiac stepping stone with fused glass pieces included. Do the fused glass pieces, since they'll be much larger than small mosiac pieces, need to be supported somehow to prevent them from breaking when I walk on them? I was thinking mastic (sp?) as the adhesive.

Thanks!

Costa Rica

Does any one work from Costa Rica, and if so, are glass and supplies available?

If you already bought the one from home depot, you could try wire-wrapping it. You could also incorporate glass beads that coordinate in all or part of the wire - another interesting look.

Good luck!

New Shelf

Hi all! I got a new kiln shelf - all is well - worked great. However, on my old shelf, I had no problem scraping off the kiln wash to apply new. This isn't the case on my new shelf - doesn't scrape off well at all. I can get most off, but am still left with a thin layer. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

I really like your concept. What did you use to frame it? Is it under glass in a frame, or on top?

very nice! :D

At a recent workshop where I was attending as a student, I got "poop" from not only the other students, but from the instructor as well for not wanting to "share" my technique! They argued that it was un-artist-like and you can't keep other artists from figuring it out using it ...

I think it's nice to post the price right there - no clicking back and forth to compare, etc. I have high speed internet access, but a lot of people don't . . .

Just my 2 pennies worth.

One more thing - I find if my glass is cold, it is brittle. If you're right under an air conditioning vent as you cut, you might want to warm up your glass on a light box. Sounds crazy, but one winter I went through tons of glass - though I'd lost my touch until I figured out it was the temperature....

Make sure you're not soldering out in the cold, which will cause the glass to change temps quickly. Also, dont solder all the way around an entire piece at once. Do a side, solder something else, then do another side. This will allow it time to cool off a little.

Good luck.
