Thank you so much for your thoughts. I'm very lucky to have a husband who is a union carpenter. Everytime he does a demolition, he brings stuff home!!!! So far I have tile for the floor, carpet for the non studio part. I have huge windows so I can look out on the lake. I'm getting free cabinets and ...

Silver Lining
I need sage advice, please. Toward the end of last year, the good Lord saw fit to drop a very large tree on the barn that housed my "studio". The damage was amazing. When you walked through the door, you ran into a tree. Even more amazing, not a single piece of glass was broken, an...

Kim and Andy, It was a couple of months ago, and I'm not a spring chicken, so let me think..... The mold is ceramic. It was flat on the kiln posts. The glass may not have been the same diameter as the mold, so that makes sense that it slipped through. The drop was 3-4 inches if memory serves me, but...

spanning the shelf joints
My kiln uses three pieces to make up the kin shelf. Of course, I need to make something bigger than one of the sections. Can I cover the shelves, spanning the joints with a thick (1/8") shelf paper, put thinfire on top of that and solve the problem, or am I going to see the joints in my end pro...

Thanks for all the tips. I just talked to a guy from the company and gave him the numbers of the piece that my brother gave me. It sounds like cool stuff. I have to use shelf paper with this product, it's made of silica, but he said it'll make an awesome shelf. He also told me they could make me a c...

Anyone know anything about Zircar ( spell)?
My brother (who is the ultimate packrat, mad scientist) heard me complaining about my new evenheat kiln and the fact the the shelf was made up of three shelves, so I had to deal with seams, blah, blah, blah. So he gives me a sheet of a stuff called Zircar. He cut it to size and everything. It's one ...

I just started getting this, too. I'm getting it on black. To me it looks a little like those pregnancy stretch marks. My spectrum black has always fired beautifully, and I had a slow to heat up kiln. I've spent an hour getting from 1300 to 1450!!! No problem. Now, new kiln heats fast, now getting d...

Um, please excuse the newbie, but.... This sounds stupid, but what makes poor craftmanship. You've mentioned kiln wash, needles, sharp corners... If my stuff doesn't have these things, does that make good craftmanship? I'm sure I'm not there yet, but how do I know? I've got a few pieces I'm kind of ...

Thanks so much, Marty, You confirmed my suspicions. I thought about cutting the rim the same size, but I wanted a nice rounded edge. I will know better next time. I also knew it would shrink some, but I never expected that much!!! The bottom seems a tad heavier, but overall the glass is thicker ever...

rim and slump questions
I just finished a bowl that turned out pretty ok :D But, it's has two small problems. The first problem is with the rim. I cut it out Patty Gray style. Wow, that worked great :D . I cut an 11 inch circle in clear for the base, then I cut a rim with an outside diameter of 11 1/4 and an inside diamete...

Barbeque fork and toasty knuckles
I did my first comb last night. Didn't have a broomstick, so I found an old stainless steel, wooden handle barbeque/grill fork and had a go of it. Either the fork wasn't strong enough, or the glass wasn't soft enough. It was hard work. Haven't opened the kiln yet, so....Anyhow, there was some burnin...
