Charle...the edges weren't ground, but you and I are on the same wavelength regarding the mechanism of what's going on. It really looks like the line I'm talking about is like a tide mark on a beach. Only in this case it marks the point to which the glass contracted before it flowed out at full fuse...

Mark...It's happened with black, and with blue cathedral. I know exactly what you are talking about, because I've seen the affect you mentioned after tack fusing some mosaic-sized frit I made by crushing S96 blue opal. I sandblasted it off and refired to 1275/10 min to fire polish. Wored great. Cliff

Intriguing surface defect

I'm a bit puzzled by a surface flaw that has developed in a couple of pieces recently fired in Spectrum 96 glass. I've noticed that sometimes a very thin mark develops about 1 mm adjacent to areas where two pieces of different colors butt together. It's always where there is cut edge, but it doesn't...

Dimensions of BE mold #8741, lamp bender sconce

The specs listed for this mold give the length (15 1/2) and depth (8 1/2), but not the width. I'd really like to know how wide the mold is before springing any cash on it. I need a surface shaped like this, over which glass can be formed in a gentle curve that will be self-supporting when stood up o...

Price points?

Hi all, I'm in contact with a gallery owner who seems interested in my work. In recent email she asked me what my price points are, and also the retail prices for the work I'd sent pictures representing. I have no idea what price points are, so I can't respond to the inquiry until I know. Anybody? T...

Review of powder and frit class at Vitrum Studio

As much as it may seem to be preaching to the choir, I'd like to provide the board readership a brief consumer report on Bob Leatherbarrow's powder and frit class held at Vitrum Studio on May 26, 27. Please recognize that all of the following statements are my personal opinions, others may have diff...

Nanc, The trick is to have the entire mass of glass heat up as uniformly as possible. You didn't mention what kind of kiln you are using, but if your kiln has side elements, only with no elements in the top/lid, the perimeter of your base and cresent may have heated at a different rate than the cent...

Here's something cool!

I'm a Mac person and most of the watermarking software seems directed at Windows platforms. I did find a very interesting and credible service that works with Adobe PhotoShop. Go here: http://www.digimarc.com/products/IMAGEBRIDGE/gettingstarted/GettingStarted.asp We did a test with one of Wendy's im...

I'm in the process of putting together a web site, and our recent discussion of the issues related to the infringement upon work by Judy and Kevin at Vitrum Studio really opened my eyes. My wife is a visual artist and has recently been quite successful at juried shows. Her work is out on the 'net, a...

DT band saws

Anyone know the difference in performance characteristics (in real life) between the the DLS Speedster, DL1000, and DL3000 band saws from Diamond Tech?

TIA,

Devit after borax solution?

I made some pattern bars and cut them into slabs using a tile saw. I was careful to place the cut slabs into water immediately upon coming off the saw, and I cleaned the cut faces with a toothbrush adn clean water before letting them dry. I've read that devit can be a problem with pattern bars, so I...

My Jen-Ken 24x11 sits atop cemment backer board layed on top of carpeting. I cut the backer board so that it's perimeter extends a couple of feet beyond that of the kiln, and I doubled the thickness directly under the kiln stand hoping to prevent cracking. It works fine, no cracks, and the cats like...

Will mullite break along a score?

I have a couple of the BE mullite damz that I'd like to make a bit shorter to fit into my 8" Aim kiln. Will they reliably break along a score line when hit with a hammer or pressed over a dowel? Which method recommended?

Paul, I had a similar, perhaps identical, problem with my Glastar pressure pot and foot pedal. When I released the pedal the grit flow would continue unless I physically shut the mixing valve at the bottom of the pot. When I would then reopen the valve, there was no grit flow until I activated the p...

Phil,

I'm assuming that the grinding/polishing step you've described is done on a flat, fused blank, as a means of corrcting surface imperfections. Is that correct?

Erik, One can selectively pull elements from a design made with photo resist as well. After applying the photo resist to the glass, the first pass or so with the blaster will blow through the lines forming the borders of each design element. This action is, in effect, the same operation as is accomp...

Steve, Density notwithstanding... :D... It's a bit hard to tell because of the texture of the granite glass, but I'm pretty sure it's on the non-irid surface, consistent with Charlie's observation. In both cases that surface is between layers. A weird thing related to this happened this weekend. I r...

Thanks for the replies so far, I appreciate them. Of course these situations are never simple, as evidenced by the questions related to information I forgot to mention. The most recent blank was fired with irid on top facing up, the previous one was fired with the iridized sheet of glass forming the bottom layer of the blank and oriented so that the non-coated surface contacted the shelf. The hazing was more prominent in this configuration than the more recent one ...
