Haze with irid clear
I've fired 2 pieces for which one layer of the 6 mm blank was Uro granite clear irid (S96). In both cases there is a very slight haze that is visible when the piece is held up to light. What is this, and how might I prevent it from happening in the future? Any thoughts appreciated, thanks in advance...

I'm not sure what particulates you might be referring to, Melissa, but general reference to anythign particulate indicates a solid as opposed to a vapor. For instance, dust is a particulate material, whereas a liquid that vaporizes is tiny droplets (I mean itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny droplets) that evap...

Thanks for the replies :!: Bert... This idea really intrigues me. I'm definitely going to try it. Tony... I may try out the mosaic cutters, but that would involve buying another tool... Wait, maybe that's not such a bad thing! :D Robert....Chipping might not be so bad in this design, but be that as ...

Scoring to break fused blank?
A design idea I'm working on would involve breaking a fused, 6 mm blank. I want the blank to be broken into 2 pieces, with the break being somewhat, but not totally, random; so smashing the piece isn't an option. I want the edges along the separation to appear organic, not sawn. My thought on accomp...

Melissa, An alternative to building a new enclosure for your kiln would be to get a kiln vent. I am firing my kiln in a similar situation, in that we live in a single story house that has no basement. My glass shop area is in the front room of the house; a room that sane people would probably use as...

Tack fuse more glass stress than full fuse?
I want to form a blank of two 3 mm, 12x12 sheets, one of which is Uro granite irid clear. I'd like to maintain the texture in this sheet, so I am going to process it at something less than a full fuse temp/time. I'm using Spectrum 96 glass, and my normal anneal for a 6 mm 12" square is: full fu...

Thanks... I've messed around with this and made a decision about which side is which. It's a bit tricky with this piece because neither side of the sheet are flat...it's quite unevenly textured. Tony...Thanks for clearing up the issue of whether or not the irid surface will fuse. Come to think of it...

Clear irid: Which side is coated?
I'm about to fuse a blank that will include clear irid as one layer for the first time. I know the iridized side won't fuse. Frankly, I'm having difficulty discerning which side of this sheet is coated (it's Uro 65-00-96IR). Is there a sure way to figure this out? I've held it up to various light so...

Curious about kiln wash
What specifically happens to kiln wash during full fuse processing that renders it unsuitable, or at least of questionable value, as a separator for subsequent firings?

Cold polishing
The thread related to my previous question about polishing discs morphed, so I'm starting a new thread with a related question.... I now have the small disc kit from His Glassworks. The mandrel shafts fit a standard 1/8" Dremel collar, which I have. I used the discs on a piece of scrap glass th...

Rosanna, Tom Eddleman and I co-wrote a compressor FAQ for the sandcarver.org site. Go here: http://www.sandcarver.org/air_compressor_selection.htm It covers most of what you are probably asking. Airbrushes have very small nozzle diameters, so they don't eat up air flow like sandblasters do, so your ...

Polishing tools for small blemishes
I need to buff out a small area, maybe 1 cm diameter. Looking through the archives and then into the HIS site, I found these: http://hisglassworks.com/pages/smallsmooth.html I'm not clear as to whether these pads and mandrels are meant to be driven by a Dremel tool or some other device. I'd apprecia...

I had the very same issue when I prepped my first ceramic mold a few months ago. There is a fair amount of discussion of this issue in the archives, but basically those spots are places where the ceramic is of a different character and density than the rest of the mold. Ditto with Brad... Nothing ne...

Marty, I built my blasting cabinet, and for gauntlets I simply went to K-mart, bought a cheap nylon jacket, and cut the sleeves off. I blast bare-handed because I prefer feeling the glass while I'm sandblasting it. The elastic in the jacket sleeves is loose enough to allow air flow, and tight enough...

Gale, I've been thinking about doing something similar to your fiber blanket method as a means of signing my work. I was wondering whether the metalics would cure if one simply signed the back of a piece with gold or platinum and then slumped into a mold as usual. Have you any experience with this? ...
