Hi Tony
I think I´ll try the refactory cement - I can buy it from a ceramic store . How do I use it?
Thanks
Luiza

kiln floor repair
Hi I have a ceramic kiln that have elements on the floor and on all sides. Unfortunately the floor has some cracks, and it´s not as plain as desirable. Last week two shelves cracked, and I know it was because the floor is not leveled. I was wondering if I can buy some kind of special "clay&quo...

CD about glass...
Some time ago I read a post about a very good CD about glass. I tryed to buy it at Whitehouse Books , but they were over.
The problem is I can´t remember the CD´s name, and I can´t find it in the archives.
Can someone help me?
Thanks
Luiza

Hi I´ve just finished a plaster/silica mould, around a wax model. The wax model was very tricky, and I´ve done 5 before I felt it was fine. Now I´ll go to the lost wax step, but I´m afraid that the mould will crack during the casting. I´ve donne all by the book, but I´m still insecure. Probabb...

Luiza- 1200 was as high as Steve went the first time. He wanted to know if 1400 would fix the milkiness on a second slump firing. I think it would cause more harm than good. Hi Tony I understood , but as you spoke about the height - and I am trying to slump a 15in disc and have a 15 in bowl without...

The glass will want to pool in the bottom of the form, and the sides will either decrease in height , and/or fold inward. Not only that, but you will pick up any texture from your form. Hi Tony If the slumping process is done at lower temps the decrease in heigh will not happen? Maybee 1200 F will ...

If it has only one colour I guess not. But it may depend on how thick you made it. Consider that it looks like a cookie, in a side view. If you fuse it onto a base with the rounded side down, it's possible that the edges could slump and trap air. Also, if it has only one colour, there are easier wa...

Two quick things . . . fire on kiln wash, less texture to begin with, and sandblast before slumping for an even smoother finish. Brock Hi I´m happy to be back after a long time distant from my kilns. It seems that I´ve forgotten everything  When you say sandblast how do I now it´s using sa...

I have been doing some work with silica cloth and it doesn't stick to the glass at fusing temperatures as its melting point is around 3000°. You can fire on it and it gives a heavy fabric-like texture to the glass. Tony http://www.amsmith.com/experiments/texturedback.jpg Tony, I loved the texture....

I would have to agree with Bert, sounds like no oil being used. You can use Kerosene. Also try using a thin machine oil diluted with kerosene. John I use kerosene too, it´s a lot easier to clean the glass than if you use any kind of oil. Last week I´ve done a piece that used 100 strips 15x0.2 in ...

My kilns are ceramic ones, and I´ve fused bottles a lot. My kiln don´t have a controller, so I control the heating and cooling the manual way. To fuse bottles, I use the brick kiln, I turn it on and let it heat till 540 C - 1000F, at his own hate that is very slow ( about 2 1/2hours ) soak for 30 ...
