q-about rebuilding a top load kiln lid

Post by dave laporta »

I have a crack running across my lid which I'll need to rebuild or replacefairly soon. So I have two questionsfor you: 1) should I build a new one myself OR purchase a replacement lid from the Manufacture? 2) if I consider building it myself (which I think can't be that hard) Are there any resources on;ine that might illustrate the steps or offer information? I will most likely upgrade to have elements in the lid if I do this.

My kiln is a Blue Diamond 23" side fire.

Any help would be most appreciated, thanks.

Mortar the crack and tighten the outer band . No need for new lid yet.

I would contact Phil Teefy at Rainbow glassworks. he makes his own kilns and I don't think there is anything on the subject that he doesn't know. He also has the elements if you decided to put one's on the lid of your kiln.
