Slumping ashtrays
Jack: We have been fusing Spectrum 100SFS, Baroque, & System96 since March, so far so good. The non-96 glass wants to devit so I use Fusion HQ (Gil Reynolds) Clear Gloss and changed my firing schedule to travel quickly past the devit range. You do need to check compatability & check with a p...

Jack: Don't quote me but I think the Bartlett KISS controller software is in the $350-375 range, my version is a couple years old now. It will only run Bartlett circuit boards (same thing with Orton.s software). Dave Bartlett was kind enough to donate the software to me as I have worked on thousands...

Slumping Ashtrays
Help! I am trying to slump a 6" square ashtray, Spectrum Baroque & 100SFS. The trouble is slumping the very small areas where the cigarette would rest. For larger pieces I usually slump at 1250 for 10 minutes, this small piece does not even start to slump at 1250. I ended up slumping at 132...

I would like to thank everyone for their help! About Computer Interface- My Bartlett set-up can monitor up to ten kilns. You do need a separate controller for each kiln. Their "KISS" software displays current "program ,set point, firing time, each zone if multi-zone. You can acces all ...

Fusing with Spectrum regular baroque
Lorelei: We fuse baroque and Sys96 all the time. The regular Spectrum needs an overglaze above 1300. We like Fusemaster Clear Gloss or Super Spray. You can also fire faster through the devit range (unless you are doing that already). I have not tried a drop ring yet. I have side elements only and ta...

Bert: I have been firing with converted ceramic brick kilns. After I finish annealing (on the cool down), I go slow (depends) till I hit 750 and then shut off the kiln. Bricks hold heat for a naturally slow cool down. When I build my Fiber Kiln, should I monitor the cool down to room temperature? (j...

Bert: No, the Bartlett boards are an unregulated 12vdc, so you cannot use them on SCR's. However, Both the V6-CF & RTC-1000 are one, two, or three zones, easily programmed in the field. This lets us run 1/3 or 2/3 of a large kiln when only partially filled. Check Turner Iron & Glass, take th...

Bert: When determining how much wattage for a kiln, do you look at the amount of mass/volume your fusing? Eurotherm is an excellent line, I used them from the mid 80's untill early 90's while building controls for marine refrigeration (fishing boats). Eurotherm, Red Lion, Watlow, all pretty much sta...

Bert: Do you really need 700-800 watts per cubic ft. I'm planning on building a larger kiln after we move, and could use some advice from wiser ones than me. We like to mix Spectum Baroque,Whispy,Cathedrals (smooth) with SYS96, so I have to pay attention to Devit. PS: I'm open for a Controller topic...

electric kiln going berserk
Hi: Omron relays are rated at 25amps. I like using Potter-Brumfeld because they are rated at 30amps. Gives you a little bit extra head room. Switching to mercury relays ( must be mounted upright +/- 15degrees), is common, however, unless the mercury has 12volt coils you still need a switching relay ...

Elmer's glue
Have you tried using cheap unscented hair spray? Just spray into a small cup, then use a very small brush and dab a bit where your pieces join. You can watch it flow in between your pieces. Takes about 20 minutes to set up. We like this a lot better than Elmer's glue. The hair spray does emit a stro...
