hold at 1000f for 20 min or so on your ramp up. the glass is cooler than the air around the thermocouple. rosanna

Re: Overglaze vs Super spray for Devitrification
Venting the kiln while heating lets out the 'fumes ' from anything organic out. Holding makes sure the whole kiln is up to temp. R.

i would get some 3 or 4 inch thick fiber blanket and lay one or two layers on top. cheap and easy and it might make a difference, r.

Re: Firing duration - rigidizer
i have always had to rigidise twice. do not expect the mold to be as tough as ceramic though. they will always be fragile. if you do not pick them up by the edges or bash them around , they are very long lasting. rosanna

Re: Multiple Shelves
if you buy a kiln with an envirovent and multiple zone controll. (scutt has this) the kiln is darn near equal from top to bottom. i can use 4 shelves in my scutt and if i place them at the proper heights, get the same amount of heat work done on all 4 shelves. r.

Re: Broken Bowl Slump
Like Marty said. You can use Multi shelves but you need to go slow. I also try and keep shelves at least 3" above the top of the mold. R.

Outdoors with a respirator would be best. Indoors the dust is going to get every where. You could rig a collector or exhaust for it. R.

Re: Makita 5010 sander
I will call Covington and see if they can help me. I really have no clue when it comes to machinery. Maybe I'll rethink the Makita 5010 disc sander. It was quick and effective at the glass shop. Thanks for the input! Susanne the glass shops around here are just sooo unhealthy in their work practice...

Re: Tighten saw blade
one more tip re saw blade nut loosening. it can be awkward to keep the blade/shaft still when loosening the nut. . i will clamp a visegrip onto the blade. lay the visegrip on the tray and clamp it on the blade. AVOID THE DIAMOND PART WHEN POSITIONING THE VISEGRIP JAWS. this prevents the blade/shaft ...
