Re: Tips for firing mult-shelves?

I'm using a Skutt ceramic side-fired kiln --WITH Envirovent-- to fire students' (grades 4 - 8 ) work. It's deep-ish... in other words I can't reach the bottom although I'm all of 5 ft tall. Example of problem: I used a basic schedule to tack fuse 3 shelves of tiles. Tiles are single layer with vary...

upon further inspection, this is a front loader btw. i see the element coils have come out of the slot there supposed to be tucked in. the coil has contracted and therefore been pulled out. so i'd have to stretch it to get it back in. i don't know if that would harm it, to do so? hope this makes se...

Re: Rick Jarvis' work

Don't know if this is the proper place to post, but knew when I saw the glass disks and the name "Rick Jarvis" on them, they had to belong to our own Rick. The International Home Furnishings Market is now in progress in High Point NC and I was there Sunday. This market spans an entire cit...

Alumina Oxide is better than plaster in terms of its release from the surface. Zircon is better yet. Warren Langley, (an Aussie), use Aluminum Oxide sifted on the surface of the sand/plaster mix when he wants a cleaner release than he gets with sifted plaster. He sifts before he makes the impressio...

Re: Rigidized FiberPaper Substrate/Molds

[quote="Jackie in Washington DC"]Oh Knowledgeable ones ... I've been using fiberpaper to create textured, bas-relief tiles. I've developed some shapes/textures that I want to repeat consistently. Gil Reynolds book #2 talks about using paper with a rigidizer as a more permanent mold substra...

Brian For hot casting, the olivine sand was mixed with bentonite and water, then sifted and pressed to get the form. The recipe I was given for kiln casting was 80% sand/20% plaster. Obviously used dry. Olivine sand is primarily magnesium sand so there is no free silica involved. The plaster is the...

Re: Reactive glass firing and devit

I'm working on a piece that has a lot of BE French Vanilla. I didn't use any devit spray because I figured it would kill the reactive quality of the glass. After three firings the French Vanilla has a very matt finish and lost most of the warm color and is mostly a flat off-white. Before the next f...

Re: COE changing after multiple firings???

Recently in another discussion Catharine mentioned that she had a piece that she had fired I think it was 17 times. I have often had pieces that I fired 5 or 6 times but never any more than that. I know that there are certain colors that can tend to change their COE after being taken to fusing temp...

Re: aluminum oxide

has anybody used aluminum oxide as a sand casting material with sheet glass? Does it stick to float glass around 1500ºF? I am working on developing a better sand casting recipe than 80% sand/20% plaster. U may like 2 try zircon might B zircon oxide or something Got a real high melt temp As a spray...

Re: Shrinkage when fusing!

Shrinkage when fusing??? I tack fused a piece yesterday, and when I took it out of the kiln, it had shrunk by about 1/4" width-wise. I have had similar problems with full fuse projects, but not tack fusing. What is happening? The program I used is- 500 dph to 250 for 10min 500 dph to 500 for 1...

I'll talk to my site crafter person about your suggestions Brian. They make good sense. The pics were dark as they were shot with print material type of publication in mind. I don't know why they needed to be so dark, but that's what the designer and printers wanted. For the site I really should ha...

Why would devitrification develop there? Is there more stress in those areas already? I wonder if I should not use this batch of gold purple I have, the side with the pattern will have to be the top of the piece to have smooth sides together. Hmmm, but it appeared on other colors as well. Just more...

I am not quite unpacked from my 3 week journey teaching and consulting. I probably learned as much as I taught. Last week, I worked with a company that bought a Moretti fuser/slumper and needed some guidance on what to do with it. The company owner had been to Italy and been given a workshop on usi...
