slump after sandblast?

Hi All, I may have made a mistake, I applied all the resist areas to glass that I will sandblast, but it slipped my mind (how?) that I planned to slump them. Can I blast and then slump (easy slump into platter mold), or do I risk diminishing the blasted texture? The slump will be at about 1250. than...

Re: strong, but thin gloves?

I have tried about 2 dozen different gloves. The nitrile are hard to get on and off, especially if the hand sweats inside (which they do). the box i have has 9mil gloves. What mil do you use, Brad? Thanks for the info. So, I may just keep using these, because i can pick up small pieces, a huge benef...

strong, but thin gloves?

Based on a bad incident, I will succumb and wear gloves in the studio. What is recommended to pick up small pieces of glass, and still provide protection?
Thanks!

Re: short thermocoupler

Figured this out.. that thermocouple would NOT have worked. However, with the help of the folks at Continental Clay, Mpls., I learned that the 8" unit I had earlier bought, but was too long, will work if i shorten it. The thermocouple probe can be cut at the end that goes into the ceramic base....

short thermocoupler

Hi All, am looking for a 4" thermocouple for my small kiln. I found one on Amazon, but the probe is inside the ceramic coveing. All my other probes protrude from the coverings, so am concerned that this will not give an accurate reading. there are no reviews on the product to check this. here i...

Re: controller for small Aims kiln

The kiln is operating better now. Odd. But the pyrometer is off (although fairly new). So, I need to be there to watch the kiln when in use. To answer your question, Brad, At high temps, it does get hotter than at the low. I will read up on this pyrometer's specs. Why it would read 1100 as getting h...

Re: controller for small Aims kiln

Manufacturer says the new analog switches are not as well made as before, so they may heat up faster.( Great.) they are not selling these kilns with those switches any more.
I did not hear clicking and will run tomorrow and see what it does at upper temps.

Re: controller for small Aims kiln

Update. We replaced the infinite switch, wiring, and electric cord to outlet all with Aims parts, and as per specs. Here is my concern. just did a test run and on the very lowest setting (below 1). kiln went up 350 degrees in 30 minutes. So, ramping up at 700 per hour on Lo - is that strange? I neve...

Re: controller for small Aims kiln

Thanks for the feedback. Spoke with the Aims manufacturer and a distributor. Turns out I need to replace the infinite switch. I will also replace the power cord and wires to the elements. So, fellow fusers, if things go south with your controller, it may be an easy fix, and not necessary to replace ...

Re: controller for small Aims kiln

I have a pyrometer that works. But nothing to turn on the kiln and then adjust the temperature. It got a little crazy, I would turn it on and then theb elements would shoot up in temp very quickly. Not controllable. To me, that requires a new controller.

Re: controller for small Aims kiln

I will look at these.
I do not need anything fancy.. I will be adjusting the firing as it happens. So, hoping there is an affordable off-brand unit.

controller for small Aims kiln

Greetings, I am looking for a new controller for my small Aims 84J kiln (8" x 8" shelf). The existing 20 yr. old controller is, well, out of control. Not sure where to shop for a new affordable and reliable controller. Amazon has several, but want one that is kiln-friendly. Any suggestions...

Re: adjustabail (?)

Hi Jim, I am looking at Hang Your Glass grips now. I have several that I have never used, and will use one as a tester. The adhesive is from about 2018, never opened, but I understand the adhesive expires, so will need to get more of that. I think their adhesive is the only one they recommend. Any t...

adjustabail (?)

Hi All, I am looking at the adjustabail system to hang larger glass panels (about 15 lbs.) I usually use large metal standoffs. (Visually not desirable and complicated for clients). How does the adjustsbail compare to Hang Your Glass systems, and would this be reliable on the back side of fused glas...

Re: Fiber Kilns- scheduling

FYI- I taught a class and we did use kilns with fiber inner panels. Heating/cooling did go much more quickly, with good results. (and you certainly will save on shipping the kiln!)

Re: zyp on SS or glazed ceramic- how?

I did purchase the brush on.. I was concerned about the spray. so, just took a jewelry mold out of the kiln. I had used the Zyp. one coat, as i read to do that. But 2 out of 3 pieces stuck in mold. had to force them out, chipping the glass as well as the mold! May have to try either 2 coats Zyp or m...
