Relief Fusing

In the latest Glass Craftsman, Robin Evans wrote an article on glass mosaic and she says you should do a fast relief fuse of the dichroic strips. Does anyone know the specifics of how to do a relief fuse and at that a fast one? This is a new term to me.

Is there such as thing as holding at the peak temp for too long? What can happen? You asked why i hold after each 250 degrees - this seems to be the way Skutt has preprogrammed their rampmaster. I think I'll send them this question. It certainly adds a lot of time to the process - the cycle took ove...

The project is 2 layers - 1/8" each. It's a bowl and it's not a deep bowl.

I think I'll try raising the heat and the soak time both. This can't hurt can it?

Uneven slumped bowl

Yesterday I slumped a 10" bowl in my Skutt kiln on the top shelf using a stainless steel mold. I used the Skutt preprogramming for slumping with slight changes: 300 DPH to 750 (holding 25 minutes after each 250) 600 degrees to 1300; hold 5 minutes at 1150; 10 minutes at 1300 AFAP to 1000 and ho...

Refire to eliminate bubble?

I fired a plate on Thinfire paper. There is one large bubble on one side. It didn't pop but it's fairly large - it looks like it might be between the layers.

Question - if I full fuse fire again, is it possible I could get rid of the bubble?

It sounds like I'm better off skipping this and finding an alternative such as the prefired board. I'm glad I found out in advance. Thanks.

I'm still not sure if I should prefire the board in my basement or not. Does the smell linger in carpeting/draperies after its done cooking? I assume that even if I don't prefire the board, that if I use the board in normal fusing, it will smell up the place. I bought the kind of board that is recom...

So you don't have to prefire the board? Does it still emit nasty smoke and odors if you don't prefire it? I have my kiln in the basement in a room that is concrete flooring and walls. But the rest of the basement is carpeted. I'm worried that if I use fiberboard in the basement, it will smell up the...

Firing Fiber Board

I just bought some 1" thick fiberboard. What will happen if I just use it to slump without firing it separately first? Also, if necessary to fire it first to get the binder out, what temp should it be fired to? I've seen 1480 and 1200 both. Do you just ramp the kiln up as quickly as possible to...

Fixtures for Sconce

Does anyone know where I can buy the lighting/wall fixtures for Bullseye mold # 8725? Bullseve sells it for $99 but I think that's a bit steep.

My kiln does not have lid elements - only side. What do you suggest the next time - should I heat the kiln to a higher temp or should I fire smaller pieces separately from larger pieces and adjust the temp accordingly?

Slumping on two shelves

I had good success in full fusing pieces on both shelves. I put a large piece on the top shelf and two small circles on the bottom. But it when it came to slumping the same pieces, the top large piece slumped perfectly. The two small circles barely started slumping on the bottom shelf. Anyone have a...

Fusing with two shelves

I am fairly new to fusing. I have a Skutt 1018 Kilm and have thus far only used one shelf in it, though it has the ability to hold two. The internal diameter of the kiln is about 23" and the shelf I have is slightly smaller than that. Can I put a second shelf in of the same size or must it be a...
