HOW DO YOU CLEAN YOUR STAINLESS STEEL MOLD?

Post by Havi »

Dear guys,
Sorry for nagging so much about my melts. On the one hand they excite me, very much, OTOH - there are 'growing up ' problems.

I noticed , that there was a lot of black debris in the kiln after the would be ' piece' was done . I liked it a lot, but I was wondering where did all this debris come from??

I think that it has to be from the still. Can you comment on this? I believe I am using Stainless steell 304.
CaN in be cleaned after the firing? How?

Than, a second problem popped up - few hours later, I was away from the glass, came back to take photos on my new Iphone - and to my shock  I find about 5 - 6 cracks!!!
Gevald!!!
I do not know how did they come. I annealed the piece 90 minutes, all the glass is BE....
WHY DID THIS HAPPEN???
I am afraid you will tell me that it is from the steell -because this means that it is incorregible....
I put it real quick to the kiln to re-fire and maybe save it. But if it is the steell - then i am lost...
I am sorry that I can't post photos of the cracks, because it is back in the kiln now, I was so afraid that it will break completely.
I'd be so greatful for comments , feedback, experience , etc.

The cracks are on the left side, kind of circly, about 1" long each.

re steel- sandblast

re cracks- shifts in COE at high temps (esp. yellows). Read BE's notes on what parameters they test their glass to (bad grammar, tsk).

Thanks, Marty!

ALL the cacks were in the lavender area - BE 1842..................., no yellow, red or orange.

I still do can not figure out what caused them.
However, I refired the piece and it looks OK, no cracks or anything.
