Re: fiber board and hardnering
Fiber boards are rated by density, HD-high density, MD-medium density, and LD-low density.
There are 2 very different kinds of hardeners, colloidal alumina and colloidal silica. The colloidal silica is more effective, tends to stay on the surface, and is very sticky to glass, so needs to be kilnwashed. This liquid will become useless if frozen, so you can not purchase it in winter in places where shipping will freeze it. Colloidal alumina can be bought as a powder and mixed with water. It tends to sink in, and acts as a separator, but not for long.
I have never hardened a board I bought, and hope to never have to. I buy what I want, and use it.

Re: fiber board and hardnering
Lower density has higher insulating values. Higher density has greater strength. I line my kilns with HD board, and also prefer those boards for shelves.mikefromitaly wrote:Bert ,excellent reply. thank you.
