CONGRATULATIONS!! That's wonderful news for such talented artists and for warm glass in general. Oh man now I REALLY wished I had made that deadline. Don't know if I would have gotten in but it sure would have been great to meet all of you finally if I had. I hope you will report back and tell us everything. Oh and keep an eye on Brock during the open bar/bidding part!

Well, yes, they did Brock, but they also said we would find out who was in the beginning of September - hence my residency on the mailbox for 3 weeks.

Now, I hate to expose my ignorance... even a little bit, but would someone be kind enough to explain the significance of the Pilchuck auction?

The short answer is, it is the single most significant auction in glass. As you could tell from the trepidation, it is difficult to get accepted, (le tout monde applies) and ocassionally, someones career takes off because of the auction. Mel Munsen is a case in point.

There will be about 250 pieces auctioned in 3-4 hours, a live auction, and 4 separate silent auctions, throughout a 5 course dinner, all the free booze you can drink, (YOU BID WHAT?), much socializing, and Pilchuck will net over a million, because all the costs are underwritten by donors and advertising.

Tony, it is the only auction I've ever attended where a bidder paid $100,000 over value for a piece.

That was the year that the Deborah Buttefield "Horse" was contested by the Shirley's and the Benaroya's, wasn't it? There actually was electricity in the room as the bids kept rising. Amazing. Brock
