i forgot to mention that i found turning off the other lights in the photo area made a big difference - the area where i do my photos has track lights with regular incandescent bulbs overhead and with those on plus the photo lights i could never get the silver chain to really look silver or my colors correct. here's a photo i took with the older coolpix camera using the white balance setting for incandescent lights

Don't forget the benefits of a good photo program like PhotoShop. I've spent hours trying to get the perfect lighting, exposure, background, shadow, etc. only to find I could manipulate a lot of these in my photo program. PhotoShop Elements is reasonable too.
As far a camera goes, I would get a unit that has the capability to shoot RAW if possible. Many magazines and books request submission in this format and it doesn't hurt to think ahead!
