Some of this was discussed just before new year here:

I think on page 2 there is my recipe for kiln sand casting...
If you want the sand to stick to the glass, just do not add anything for separation.
As for sea/river sand; yes - you can use it but pre-firing it to about 600C/1112F will spare you the unpleasant surprises.
