Height of kiln shelf

Post by Lauri Levanto »

Brock recommended in another thread to use
1" kiln posts under the shelf. What is the rationale for this?

If the shelf is on the bottom od a kiln, it cools off thru the glass and mold if any. This will extend the annealing time.
If the shelf is higher, air circulates under the shelf, too,
the coolest air falling under the shelf.

Space under the shelf works well with mullite shelves. If you fire on fiber board there is no need to raise it. The mullite shelves hold heat and the fiber board is an insulator. Circulating air around the mullite allows it to both heat and cool more evenly and quickly.
