rust on glass from reciprolap

I recently purchased a reciprolap, which I LOVE! Problem: rust on glass, how to remove

It came covered in dark oil. Once the oil was removed from repeated usage, the plate began to rust. I was left with rust stains on opaque glasses. So, I re-oiled the plate with motor oil. It works fine now, but how do I remove the rust from my glass? I thought of navel jelly, but wanted to ask before I tried.

Anyone experience with rust?

ps. I searched the archives, but found only 3 mentions of reciprolap (the way I spell it) and no mentions of rust.

rociprolap.

And when you use a rociprolap, never leave it wet. First, you don't put THAT much water in it while it's operating, just enough to make a slurry. If it's splashing at all, there's too much water.

Second, the tray(s) must be completely clean and dry whenever they're not being used. If the tray is pitted you've got to make sure the water is out of there, too. (try a blowdryer) If the tray's really pitted and rusted out, get a new one.

If there is rust, a mild abrasive will remove it. Don't operate the rociprolap with rust on the tray--it'll exacerbate the rust problem you already have, it'll get rust on the glass, and it may also interfere with the grinding/polishing action.

No more rust. Thanks to all. My new question:

How big of a part does the oil play in the act of grinding?

1. I use an industrial vacuum cleaner to clean the ROC. It is really helpful as it sucks the water and the silicon carbide, and enables me to work with the ROC in a very convenient way.

2. I found here, in Israel a special liquid 'green', i.e. ecological, which cleans the rust . Only, that applying it needs to wipe the bed thoruoghly as soon as the rust is cleared.

Well, does the oil interfere with the grinding? I haven't found the line between oiled to prevent rust, and oil free- ish.

ROC. I like that moniker, Havi. It really fits this squatty machine.

Oil and water do not mix. Given sufficient agitation the oil and water form a thick soapy like syrup. This will not help the grinding process as it provides lubrication (of sorts) rather than allowing the grit to do its work.

Yes, assuming you have sufficient oil to make a good emulsification, rather like hose shakeup salad dressings. But I wouldn't think a light swipe of oil would be enough to do that, though...?

How about cooking spray, or spray oil? I need something that doesn't collect in the holes.

Can anyone give me advice on how to oil my rociprolap?

Hi Rose, I can't help with your last question but I seem to remember reading in one of the threads that Magic Eraser will remove rust marks from glass if it happens again. I haven't tried it so can't add an endorsement. Jen
