Hello all.
Is there any reason why failed lead crystal casting can't be broken up, cleaned up and recast?
It sounds too simple. Anything I need to watch out for?

Re: recasting
Hi Peter.
I have had no problems reusing crystal. I mainly use blackwood.
Obviously try to ascertain why the original failed.

No reason I can think of, as long as you cut off any parts with obvious scum/devit. You might have trouble with striking or maturing colors--opalines lose some translucency, you've got to be careful with reds, etc.
Depending on how/what failed you can also just recast your failure as-is and see if you can bring it back. Just reshape/correct the casting with organic wax (I melt beeswax and lard together) to fill in the voids. Encase it in your mold mix, with a reservoir(s) over the spots that will need more glass, and refire.
Max, I envy Blackwood users. Can't get it over here, have heard so much about it, would love to try it.

Cynthia, blackwoods might ship to the US. And if you ship by sea (3-4 weeks delivery) rather than air (1-2 weeks delivery) postage is less than you think.Morganica wrote:
