casting starfire

Looking through the archives, I realize there may be a problem with 1/4" starfire in terms of devit, or tin bloom(are they the same?). Does anyone have a good line on whether this was an older problem that is now not a problem, due to rebatching specs, or does using starfjre mean I'm headed for a train-wreck, no matter whether I apply Borax spray or not, there may still be a flume on the surface.
Also, can anyone suggest a good formula for kiln-carving an intense relief pattern into this glass...w/o a devit problem
