Pencil Blaster Questions

Hi Everyone,

I am still trying to help the professor get the right equipment for the vitrograph workshop.

She talked to the metals dept. about their sandblaster. It's not working right, it is said to have to run all the time or else it doesn't shut down. This is what I know about the system. It's a syphon system with a compressor that runs at 1.8 cfm and has an "uneven" blast. The professor I'm dealing with was thinking about buying a pencil blaster from Rio Grande. I don't know anything about their hose set up, could the pencil blaster be hooked up to the other cabinet? Is this kind of thing standard? I told her to just use the current metals dept. system but she wants to check with Rio Grande. I also told her that if she decides she wants to work vitrographs into the cariculum (sp?) that she should invest in a real set up with a pressure pot.

Thanks for all the help,
Amy

Amy,

The pencil blaster is good for very small areas only. If she is going to be blasting a range of sizes, she really needs to have the siphon cabinet repaired (it may be as simple as replacing the gun with one from TPTools http://www.tptools.com). The alternative is to invest in a pressure pot which can be used with the existing cabinet. Also, I don't believe that a 1.8 CFM compressor will run any commercial siphon blaster, so that may be the problem with their siphon blaster..

Thanks Tony. I told her that a 1.8cfm compressor was not big enough. The metals dept. apparently has the part on order that will fix the problem but it won't be at the school in time for the workshop. Well, they may have to make due with what they've got.

You might suggest that she rent or borrow a larger compressor for use with the sandblaster. That may be the least expensive, short-term solution to the problem.

Yeah, we've talked about doing that. I think she is just still getting information and that she is going to decide what to do soon.

Thanks for the suggestion.
