did my first test yesterday. took two 1 1/2" squares of 1/4" thick fiber paper and soaked one with one teaspoon of bought rigidiser and one with my colloidal alumina mix. threw them into the kiln wet on a piece of wax paper (i was afraid the shelf would leach out the wet stuff). fired with some other tests to around 1600 or so. the alumina one is at least twice as stiff and hard as the silica one. now another check my math question.i mixed 12 oz powder with 1 qt water. wasn't thinking. could have just weighed the water as well... any how my mix weighs 2 lbs 12 oz. so that is 32 oz water and 12 oz powder.(not counting the weight of a half gallon milk jug which is about 1 oz) how close is that to the recommended 30/70 mix? i want to start at that so i have some bench mark. my mix is a little slimy. i also need to dye it so i can get evenivity. anyhow i will soak some big rings today. i am impressed. rosanna

Your mix was 62.5% / 37.5% or a little thick. If you factor in an oz for the jug it comes out closer to 66 / 34

I don't think the percentage is important other than to be able to apply an even coating. The stuff I had from long ago was green. I am assuming that the powder you used is white.

yes white powder. i will thin it down some. for a quick and dirty test, this stuff is way cool. rosanna
