any tips on firing a blank with a crack in it?

Post by dave laporta »

I have a 16 dia. BE clear blank that I cut this morning and as I pressed on the cut, a crack ran into my piece about 1" from the edge to the center. I think it fine to use but to avoid it running any further should I take extra care in my ramp up? My layup is single rolled glass on the bottom (a 2.5" black rim with another color inside) the the dble rolled clear w/crack on top of that then some lampworked stringers on top of the clear. And I have a side fire kiln. TIA for the help- dave

Sometimes they run, sometimes they don't.
I would advise a VERY slow ramp up.

Yeah, probably no faster than that. Hard to say, it depends on your kiln.

Crack in bottom layer

Post by cindyj »

I had the same happen last week. Two layers of BE clear with design elements on top. I put the cracked piece on the bottom (it was about 3/4 across a 10 inch circle) and fired slowly. Came out with no evidence of the crack to be found. I was suprised and pleased. One day I will but all my circles perfectly

Good luck
